March
Dean Budnick
2002-03-20

As I look back over the past month two topics predominate. The first of these is the tragic passing of Mark Vann at the age of 39. In a band filled with strong personalities and elevated musicianship, Vann’s musical voice resonated with clarity and grace. It was also a true pleasure to watch him in less formal clinic settings. Above all else, on so many levels, he will be missed.

In a different context, everybody seems to be talking about Bonnaroo. The festival which will take place in Manchester, TN on June 21-23 has elicited quite a bit of excitement as well as some concerns about logistics and the usual gripes about omissions (“Why isn’t ----[insert band] on the bill”- well just wait, there will be additions). We are going to offer you a unique perspective on the event through our Bonnaroo Beat section which will peer behind the scenes. This way we can all watch the development of what has all the hallmarks of an epic event.

What else? Well this is March which means that the ABB Beacon run is underway so we have feature interviews with Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks as they talk about the current run and the flurry of ABB activity ahead. We also discuss new music with Stanton Moore, Del McCoury Band (perhaps my favorite article this month), Strangefolk, ekoostik Hookah, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, John Brown’s Body and many more- look for all of these on our features page, along with Part II of Agent Stardog’s “X-Philes.” There's also plenty more to read, including our CD reviews, Departments, Columns, show reviews and Charts.

And finally, hang on, the-much promised Jammys announcement is coming soon (really…)

later days and peace,
Dean
