This month I have dual obsessions: the Derek Trucks Band and the Other Ones. To be honest they're not all that mutually exclusive as Derek has previously performed with these musicians and Other Ones guitarist Jimmy Herring has long been a mentor to him. Of course, in addition, Derek's wife, Ms. Susan Tedeschi, has been added to the mix and will lend her vocals to the group for many forthcoming shows. Last week I had a few chances to see both bands which only magnified my reaction. Each offers unique quality entertainment in its own right- Derek with his slide-infused world music and the Other Ones as they work to keep the songs and sounds of the Grateful Dead vibrant and vital (although it will be nice to see what Susan can bring to bear- when I had saw them they had just started to work her in). Speaking of Susan, her new album is in heavy rotation out here too- it offers a range of approaches and features both her current touring band as well as the Derek Trucks Band on two songs (including a cover of Paul Pena's "Gonna Move" which she has been performing with the DTB as of late).

As you can imagine, our features touch on these artists as well. Rob Johnson offers an expansive Derek Trucks piece that effectively tracks the guitarist's career and also suggests where he's headed. John Patrick Gatta asks the questions you'd like to ask of Other One's keyboard player Rob Barraco, moving from the Zen Tricksters on to life on the road with the Dead alumnae. Of course that's not it, there' s also articles on Dickey Betts, Soulive, Fuzz, Ricky Skaggs, Drive By Truckers and the ever-popular "more..."

Oh yes, since New Year's Eve looms, we've also added a section with show listings, you may want to check that out. Of yes, and as I type this like many of you I am gearing for the big Thanksgiving rush of family and shows. Lets enjoy them both...

later days and peace,
Dean
