Auld Lang Syne Set 2:
Bob Weir, Victor Wooten, Umphrey’s McGee, Marco Benevento and more

Mike Greenhaus
2006-12-15

Once again a year has come and gone too quickly and, once again, we are left with twelve months of music to sort through. For the second year in a row, we asked a number of our favorite musicians, managers and industry gurus to talk about their favorite albums, bands and performances. Look for a new “set” each week in December (be sure to take a look at Set One, if you haven’t done so yet).

BOB WEIR

What will you remember most about 2006?
The election. I thought that this country was going to hell in a bucket, but America seems to be pulling out of its tailspin. It’s going to take a lot more work, but at least people are tired of being lied to and that’s a huge step in the right direction.

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
That’s gonna be a rough one for me, but I think RatDog’s gonna do real well in 2007.

What was your favorite show in 2006?
For us, it’s probably up around 100 shows. I can’t really remember.

What album comes up most often in your iTunes (or CD player)?
I don’t listen to albums. I have what used to be the “fat one,” now they have an 80 GB iPod, and it’s nearly full. I just keep it on shuffle and listen to what comes up. There’s a lot of classical music on it, a lot of jazz music on it, but not a whole lot of pop music.

JAMIE MCLEAN (DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND, JAMIE MCLEAN BAND)

What will you remember most about 2006?
Leaving the Dirty Dozen Brass Band to tour and record full time with Jamie McLean Band.

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
The Slip

What was your favorite show in 2006?
Eric Clapton at MSG. He can still play and sing his ass off. The band was cooking and Derek was just smoking every tune in the set.

In the last year what album has appeared most often in your itunes
(or CD Player)?

The Stax Boxed Set, Los Lobos-Kiko, and Wilco-Kicking Television

STEVE BERNSTEIN (RELIX, REX FOUNDATION)

What will you remember most about 2006?
The proliferation of "seniors" comeback tours

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
Toubab Krewe Why? Listen to them....

What is your favorite show in 2006?
I was lucky enough to catch Victor Wooten's band in Rochester this year. They KILLED it. What a talented band of brothers (literally).

In the last year what album has appeared most often in your itunes (or CD Player)?
A few I have not stopped listening to: the Essential T-Bone Burnett album, Abigail Washburn, and the new moe. album, The Conch.

NOAH CHERNIN (SAM CHAMPION)

What will you remember most about 2006?
How far out of touch I became with modern music. Rediscovering the Beatles is such a joy. It far outweights keeping up. I think it also helps creative types keep more creative. You gotta go where you gotta go and stay off Stereogum.com!

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
Sam Champion.

What was your favorite show in 2006?
The Comas at Pianos. Late night show, free party. All the hits.

What album comes up most often in your iTunes?
Harry Nilsson's Son Of Schmilsson.

ANDY BERNSTEIN (HEADCOUNT, PHARMER’S ALMANAC)

What will you remember most about 2006?
Getting HeadCount going again really defined the year for me personally. I was very proud of the team we assembled and what we accomplished. Hopefully, it's a next step toward something bigger in the future. The fact that congress changed hands on fewer than 5,000 votes really validates the importance of what we do.

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
Toubab Krewe. Nothing like watching a band on the rise. They're the quintessential buzz band right now.

What was your favorite show of 2006?
David Gilmour at Radio City. When the lasers came on during "Echoes" I think I made some involuntary noises. Blew away the Roger Waters show at MSG a few months later.

What album comes up most often in your iTunes (or CD player)?
The Beta Band's Greatest Hits.

MARCO BENEVENTO (THE BENEVENTO/RUSSO DUO)

What will you remember most about 2006?
Being at the PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey with Russo, Trey, Mike Gordon, Phil Lesh and the entire Benevento Family

What was your favorite show in 2006
The Slip, Benevento/Russo Duo, and My Morning Jacket, the Electric Factory, PA [12/1/06]

What album comes up most often in your iTunes?
Ornette Coleman, Soapsuds, Soapsuds

SUPER DEE (JAMBASE)

What will you remember most about 2006?
2006 is the year that we Americans waited for the other shoe to drop whether it be from our feisty Mother Nature or from the people that hate us from abroad. While nasty conflicts continue in the Middle East, folks here at home stood in line for three days for video games. We lost Syd Barrett and gained Suri Cruise. Our government has seemingly turned blue for the time being, which works for me!

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
My Morning Jacket

What was your favorite show in 2006?
Radiohead at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA

What album comes up most often in your iTunes (or CD player)?
The Slip - Eisenhower

ROB MARSCHER (ADDISON GROOVE PROJECT)

What will you remember most about 2006?
I got married this year and so did two other members of Addison Groove Project, as well as our manager and tour manager. Big wedding season.

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
I'm really not sure on this one. Seems like the Greyboy Allstars are back touring and are releasing a new album. I'd recommend seeing them if you haven't, before. AGP will be doing a series 10th Anniversary shows this spring, and with lead singer/guitarist Brendan McGinn getting neck-deep in med school, it might be the last time to see us play for a long time.

What was your favorite show in 2006?
Radiohead at Bonnaroo - I had been wanting to see them live for an extremely long time, but it hadn't worked out until this summer. I got the chills and I really like their new songs. Although I have to say that the Greenhaus birthday gig on the Rocks Off boat that I did as a duo with drummer Conor Elmes and special guest Josh Baron is a close second. ;)

What album comes up most often in your iTunes?
This year the winner was…Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

The Democrats taking the House and Senate back

Who will be the band to see in 2007?

Animal Collective

Going back to play Alaska.

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
I'm desperately trying to go see Clapton with Derek Trucks. Other than that, I think there are many great bands to see in 2007 including Hot Buttered Rum, Railroad Earth, ALO, Tea Leaf Green, Umphrey's MGee, and RAQ. Geez there are so many good bands out there!

The New Deal-Gone, Gone, Gone, Brazilian Girls, The Best of Benny Goodman, and Genesis-Platinum Collection

ETHAN SCHWARTZ (LANGERADO)

What will you remember most about 2006?
I should say something important here to make myself sound smarter than I really am, like the Democrats taking control of the House and Senate or something like that. But the most memorable thing to me was the 2nd night 2nd set of Camp Bisco. Being with
my wife and a great group of friends in the Catskills Mountains during the “House Dog” sandwich just reminded me how much I love that band and going to see live music, in general.

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
I am just blown away by Explosions in the Sky every time I listen to them. I'll be in the middle of something and they come on and I just have to stop everything I am doing. They are dangerous to listen to when you are driving.

What was your favorite show in 2006?
The Secret Machines at Langerado. Just a complete rock and roll show from beginning to end - amazing lights, incredible sounds... the whole package. A close second would be Guns N' Roses. Who besides Axl Rose has the balls to not even go onstage at an arena until 11:30 at night? Oh, and the 4th season of the Wire. The best show ever on television. Prove me wrong.

What album comes up most often in your iTunes?
The Beatles - Abbey Road, Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Grandaddy - Sumday, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks - Pig Lib, David Cross - Shup Up, You Fucking Baby

VICTOR WOOTEN

What will you remember most about 2006?
One of the biggest things was the Acoustic Planet tour with other
Bands. That was really unique tour and really fun tour.

Who will be the band to see in 2007?
I'm going to say the Lee Boys. They're real people playing real music and
right now they're still playing because they absolutely love it.

What was your favorite show of 2006?
A week with Chick Corea at the Blue Note that I got to play. I have to give
you two, though. I also got to play “School Days” with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller in New York City

What album comes up most often in your iTunes or CD player?
Hannah Montana, Radio Disney, because of my nine year.
