Big Sky Regional Report

BigSky Regional Report - April/May 2001

by David Shulman

Looks like the region may be in for a very special treat this spring/summer as a few major tours are booking a significant number of shows in the area.   The String Cheese Incident is teaming up with Widespread Panic for 2 shows, one in St. Louis, the other just outside of Kansas City.   In addition SCI will teaming up with Phil & Friends for a few shows in the area, not to mention additional P&F shows around the region.   If that wasn't enough the yet to be confirmed Trey Anastasio tour (or at least we should say Trey in

some combination) has be mentioned for several region stops including July 20 at Riverport (St. Louis area).

Some of you are aware that Cicero's (a past jambands.com venue of the month) experienced a fire several weeks ago which caused a temporary shutdown of the venue/restaurant.  An update from Cicero's compliments of moheads.com states:

A Message About Cicero's

The shows for the next 4 weeks have been canceled. Hopefully, we will have everything up and running by the time the Homegrown Spring Jam rolls around with Rebecca's Statue on 4/21 followed by Project Object on 4/22. As far as other shows---The Kind will be playing at Z on Tuesday and I'm not sure what Jake's Leg will be doing on Friday's. Once I know of a definite re-opening date, I will let you all know. Finally, I am back into my apartment so I will be answering e-mail more frequently---shit....with no job for a few weeks.. TRUST ME... I'll have LOTS of time to answer e-mail. If any of you who are in bands and had shows canceled at Cicero's (due to the fire) let me know if you need help finding alternative venues to play your shows.

Thanks you for all the hospitality a lot of you offered me and Cicero's employees. This really proves that the Mo-Head list shows NOTHING BUT LOVE. Thanks again and hope to see all of you REAL soon Jay Cicero's

Area Reviews (courtesy of moheads.com)

Ratdog
3-27-01 Mississippi Nights, St. Louis, MO

1: Feel Like A Stranger > Minglewood, Easy To Slip > The Winners> El Paso > BT Wind > Rooster> Easy To Slip Jam > Supplication Jam > Easy To Slip > Odessa

2: Lucky Enough > New Speedway> Lost Sailor > Saint> Other One > SOLOS > Mission In The Rain > Other One > Terrapin Station > Sugar Magnolia

E: Johnny B (First " Feel Like A Stranger")(First " Mission In The Rain")

My thoughts of the show.... Utter Sweetness... you can tell the band is still working out some kinks and Bobby reaching into his grab bag of songs I'm sure he hasn't played in a while. Although, you have to enjoy the 4 or 5 times he forgets the lyrics of some of the songs.

All in all, a very enjoyable packed venue with much fun.... hell the sound guy did rather well for himself as well. Nothing like a little "honey" to go with a Ratdog show. The bass solo included teases of at least Amazing Grace, St. Stephen, The Other One, and Not Fade Away...probably more! Rob was having fun too.

Sweetness, tightness, energy, nostalgia, all of those apply but what I felt the most was that the REAL Grateful Dead spirit of music was present last night. In the crowd, the musicians and the music. Period.

moe. -- 3.17.01 @ Denver, CO

Here's the setlist from last night's show:

moe.3/17/01 Fillmore Auditorium - Denver, CO(Yonder Mountain String Band opened.)

1: Plane Crash, Can't Seem To Find, It, New York City, Jazz Wank > Buster > Roll > Irish Jig

2: St. Augustine, Time Again*, Mexico, Kyle > Brent Black > Bring It Back Home

E: Voodoo Lady * With mandolinist from Yonder Mountain String Band.

From what I hear, the previous two shows of the tour (Lawrence and Omaha) were better musically, but the show was an all-around blast. Both band and crowd were living up the St. Patty's spirit, and YMSB did a fine job of warming up the place. I was surprised that moe. damn near filled up the Fillmore-- the place wasn't quite sold out, but it well over 90% full. Lance

moe. -- 3.16.01 @ Liberty Hall

There's not too much about specific songs in the following "review", just some overall info about the show...On Friday morning, we called to see if there were any moe. tickets left, and the guy said "there are a few hundred left". So we took 2 people to what was supposed to be their first moe. show, one of them being a huge pink floyd fan.

As we were walking up to liberty hall, Al walked by us, probably going back to the bus. We got up to liberty hall, and the show was sold out, so they went on to a bar to watch KU win.

People were trying to sell extra tickets for $45.00!!! We went in, and were able to walk right up to the stage. I think the show started around 9:30, with Money... jake was kind of pissed off that he missed it. I don't remember the whole set list, so I'm only going to comment on what I can remember, whether it's in the right order or not.

Later they played happy hour hero. I remembered when they played it at Lawrence or Columbia last year, rob forgot the words, and the whole time i was thinking that i was close enough to go up and tell him the words to his own song.... and this time we were even closer, but he didn't forget the words this time : ) During one of the songs, rob was doing this weird squatting thing... al did it a few times too... I think sensory deprivation bank was the last song of the set... I'd forgotten about that song since I hadn't heard it in a while, and it was great. I don't remember how long the set break was, but during that time, I managed to get right up next to the stage, so that the only thing between me and Al was the speaker on the stage.

The second set started with a great Blue Eyed Son.... I really hope my son's eyes end up being blue... he's only 2 months old, and his eyes are still gray ... anyway ... next was a really long Faker which was great ... it segued into another song, but I don't remember what.

About half way through the second set, I couldn't hear any lyrics anymore.... just al's guitar, and my ears still hurt : ( but I guess that's what I get for standing right in front of the stage all night... The last song of the set was Rebubula, which Brian called at the beginning of the show.

Throughout the whole show, a guy was holding up a sign that said "who's tuff". At the end of the show, rob asked him "what the hell does that mean". Right before they started the encore, don't fear the reaper, rob took the guy's sign and said "I'll show you who's tuff" and ripped it up and threw it back at him. After they finished don't fear the reaper, it looked like they were going to play another song, but they didn't : ( I think the second set was about 2 hours long (the first was only an hour), and it was better than the second set.
