Northeast Regional Report Edited by Tony Oliveira & Pete Sahlin

From the Editors:
Welcome Folks,
This past month has been especially enjoyable- music wise- here in New England. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did! Anyhow, it seems that many of you probably had too much fun, since I haven't received many reviews of all these fines shows. I've managed to cover a few of the for you, but, as always, your help is both welcome and needed. I know a lot of you are on discussion lists for your favorite bands and likely, do reviews for those particular lists. Why don't you guys send those reviews our way (CC: us!) so everyone else can enjoy them too? Remember, many of the bands we love get little or no publicity from the usual media outlets and they too can use your help in "spreading the word" and of course, the music! The list you're on already knows how good your favorite band is....let us know about it too! I'm sure we (the bands and fans) would all appreciate it. Not to mention, you can see your name in lights, so to speak. Remember all reviews are due by the 5th of the month. OK, enough preaching. We'll see ya all at the Dec. shows and the Holiday runs.

Happy Holidays,
-Tony and Pete

NEWS:

Electric Blue and the Kozmik Truth:

Their publicist wishes to inform everyone that two members have left the band; one guitarist and one drummer. They are now playing as a four piece band and actively looking to add a fifth musician, a keyboardist. If anybody out there knows of, or is a talented keyboard player and would like more information; call Jerry Camerota of True Blue Productions at (413) 323-8822.

The Slip- Paradise Rock Club, Boston MA
11/12/98
by Tony Oliveira

Well, it had been a few months since I managed to catch the Slip and needless to say, I was not disappointed. For some reason I keep missing these guys and since they are pretty much a local band, I guess I've been taking them for granted; rest assured, this will no longer be the case. I'm not nearly familiar enough to write a *proper* review so you'll just have to make due with this one.

The Bread & Puppet Circus performed (a play) before the Slip took the stage. I found it mildly entertaining, though many people seemed to love it. The Slip took the stage to a decent (size) and very energetic crowd at about 11 PM. For those of you not familiar with them, they are a 3 piece band; drummer, bass player and guitarist. Most of their songs are instrumental pieces though they do sing a few songs. I hate to label any bands, but they've always reminded me of MMW; just swap the Keyboards for a guitar. Actually, the guitarist reminds me a lot like Scofield because of his guitar style. This is not to say they aren't very original...they are. They played mostly instrumentals and even gave each other a solo or two. At least I remember the bass player getting one and I think, the drummer. About 2/3 of the way through the show, they sang their first song. Immediately, the improvement in their vocals struck me.

I recall the first few times I saw them; they didn't sing any songs. Then I remember when I first heard them sing and I honestly thought it needed some work, but was still enjoyable...now, they seem to have improved quite a bit. All in all, I was very impressed and they seem to have improved every time I've seen them. I will definitely be taking in more Slip shows in the near future...I recommend everyone do the same if they play your area.

Widespread Panic- The State Theater, Portland, ME 11/20/98
by Donny Grieco

1: Let's Get Down To Business, Little Kin > Use Me > 1x1, Hatfield > Stop-Go > Raise The Roof > B of D > Proving Ground 2: Papa Legba > Guilded Splinters > Dying Man, Airplane > Rebirtha > Drums > Mercy > Radio Child

E: Happy > No Sugar Tonight

[Dave brought out a birthday cake for Todd while JoJo played Happy Birthday after 'Drums']

Portland was great, except for all the rain and the traffic getting out of Boston. We walked in right in the middle of my first "Let's Get Down To Business" since Irving Plaza 95. The first thing I noticed was how beautiful the State Theater is. It was very wide with 3 levels of open space and then several rows of seats and a balcony. It was even nicer than the Merrill Auditorium, without the overbearing security. I told my girlfriend that I would never miss a good show at this place. "Use me" was a first. 1x1 was killer. The last time I heard this live was at Portland last year and I noticed they repeated several songs from 4/24/97 (raise the roof, dying man, happy). Nothing to complain about. I had no idea they played B of D, my first time ever hearing it. We spent the first set at the front row of chairs to the left of the tapers (I brought 2 tapers to their first show, both left impressed). We moved to the balcony where they were selling beer. "Legba" kicked of second set. I think this one was a first for me. "Aeroplane" was my first since Lupos in 96. It jammed like crazy into "rebirtha" and then into drums. At the end of drums, schools brought out a birthday cake for Todd and Jo Jo played happy birthday which lead into an always welcome "Radio Child". Hands down the best encore I have witnessed. "Happy" and my first "No Sugar" tonight.

Electric Blue and the Kozmik Truth - Theodore's, Springfield, MA 11/25/98

Being home (Ludlow) for Thanksgiving, I decided to head downtown to check these guys out - again. FYI Springfield is somewhat lacking in the local music scene, especially among jambands. I know this because I lived in the area for the better part of my life, before heading east. Anyhow, I arrived at the show to a pretty packed house. I had been to Theodore's on many an occasion. They usually have lots of blues bands and are one of the few bars in the area that have live, "original" music, on a regular basis. I had never really seen it this crowded...nice to see. This is a band I've seen a couple of times, but am not *familiar* with so I can't go into detail about the songs/versions, etc. EBKT was a six piece band on this night (see the news section for an update); two guitarists, two drummers, bass player and a female singer. Both guitarists have an Almanesqe sound with a blues feel thrown in there. The singer has a phenomenal voice, which seems to get compared to Janis Joplin, all the time. I've actually seen her compared to Deep Banana Blackout's lead singer (another female voice often compared to Janis). Personally, I think her voice comes much closer. Electric Blue and the Kozmik Truth does a mix of covers and originals and sometimes- instrumentals. I do recall them doing an Allman's cover that night which I thought was exceptional. My foggy memory also recalls that he singer did an amazing rendition of, what I think, was a Joplin tune- sorry, but the name escapes me. It's a song with no music and her powerful voice gets center stage for this one. Well, this was definitely the most enjoyable of the few shows I have seen. Make sure to check these guys out if they come around to your area and of course, send your review our way! -Tony

  II (1:18): Buried Alive, Wipe Out**, Chalk Dust Torture*** ->
             Mirror in the Bathroom -> Chalk Dust Torture -> Dog
             Log^ -> Chalk Dust Torture > Sanity, Buffalo Bill ->
             Mike's Song^^ -> I Am Hydrogen-> Weekapaug Groove^^^
             > Jam^^^^ -> Run Like an Antelope

  E (0:13): Wading in the Velvet Sea, Golgi Apparatus -> Wipe
               Out+

  * - with whistling
  ** - Fishman introduced by Trey
  *** - with Wipe Out teases
  **** - Special Beat aka (?) The English Beat cover (2 verses
         played); from the album Gangsters; first time played
  ^ - possibly inspired by a dog show taking place next door
      to the Centrum; very bluesy
  ^^ - with spacy, ambient jamming
  ^^^ - with recurring Wipe Out jamming and spacy jam
  ^^^^ - spacy jamming, basically they stopped the jam out of
        Weekapaug Groove and restarted Weekapaug and its jam
        about 9 minutes long
  + - with Fishman drum solo before being introduced by Trey
      again and finishing Wipe Out

Well, if the setlist (especially 2nd set!) doesn't get your mouth watering, then I'm afraid I don't what will. I arrived early enough to grab a couple of brews over at the Firehouse and ran into a couple of TG friends. I was waiting for another friend to arrive, since I had his ticket and 2 extras for Saturday. Luckily, I ran into him out on the street, right before he was about to give up and go home. Went inside and just missed the beginning of Funky bitch - pretty standard version. Decided to hang with a friend in his seats, rather than go to mine, on the floor. First set highlights, for me, were Runaway Jim, a *very* nice Reba, and Vultures - because it doesn't seem to get played all that often. I went and did my usual between set activities, bathroom, beer and finally made it onto the floor. Like I said, I thought the first set was pretty good, but I had no idea what was in store for the 2nd set. Quite possibly, one of the best Phish sets I have ever seen! I say this because of the rarities, the segues, AND the hot jamming through out. I particularly loved the double "Chalkdust" sandwich - much tastier than the chalkdust I *tasted* when the teacher made me clap the erasers ;) This was followed by Sanity. I recall them doing some warped jam last year that had some kind of Sanity tease, but this was the real deal. Buffalo Bill was next and I haven't heard this since the Great Went. Mike's Song followed and that whole segue was exceptional. I'm not even sure I've ever heard a live "I Am Hydrogen"? There was lots of spacey stuff during the whole thing. Antelope closed out the set. I thought it was pretty decent...nothing special, but I need to hear the tapes before I conclude that. Antelope is always one of my favorites, so it's one of those songs that I can never say I've heard a *bad* version of. The encore was melodramatic - a nice wind down, but I didn't realistically expect it to follow up the monster 2nd set. Looking forward to the NYE run.... -Tony
