Phil Lesh and Friends: Roseland Theatre, Portland Oregon
by Gordon Wilson

This was an incredible show for me. I came up with this idea a month ahead of the show that I would ask and see if I could get a photo pass, for I knew a wee bit about photography. All of my buddys that I passed this idea onto thought that I was asking for a miracle, but lo and behold within the next couple of weeks I got an e-mail saying that there would be a photo pass for me at the door. Shit! I couldn't quite believe it, me, a regular Joe was getting a pass to photograph Phil Lesh, it was almost too much for me to comprehend. Although I had heard stories that Phil Lesh himself was a humble and mellow person, so I tried to imagine myself shaking his hand and saying "howdy" backstage, but it was just too much. So anyways the show date arrives and I'm in a bit of an excited mess, I made sure I had my camera and film and batteries and hit the street. Just so happens I get to the show a bit late, so I didn't get to make it backstage, but it was incredible all the same. Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, John Molo, Rob Barraco, and Phil Lesh were laying it out this evening. I tried to get shots from all over the Roseland, when I got up close I started bouncing on the floor to the beat of the music, and I had a vision of the center of the Earth and then looking up I saw a moonlit Coliseum rising up into the heavens with divine music pouring out of it. "Sugaree", "Wharf Rat", "She Said She Said" and "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" were all quite good! Check out some of the pics, take care, peace out. GW
