George Porter Jr. is currently on board Jam Cruise with the Original Meters. In February he’ll travel to Colorado for three dates with the Foundation of Funk, which also features Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste along with John Medeski and Eddie Roberts. Over the months to come he’ll also appear his own trio, with whom he will release an album.

What will you remember most about 2016?

While 2016 was a rough year for the New Orleans music as we lost so many legends and I lost friends, personally 2016 was a pretty good one for me. My family has been happy and healthy, I have worked hard on writing new music and had fun playing with all of my bands. The best part of all is I have celebrated 50 years of love with my wife Ara.

Which album or albums have you listened to most this past year?

Because I have been working on recording this past year with my Porter Trio the only music I have been listening to is our live recordings. Listening to our gigs helps with new thoughts.

What was your favorite show of 2016?

Every time I am asked this question it seems my answers always seem to be gigs I have played recently. Earlier in the year I may have answered differently as my memory for gigs seems to be about two months long. That said, I will choose two, my 69th birthday party at The Maple Leaf and Warren Haynes X-mas Jam.

Any big plans in the works for 2017?

Yes, I plan to get the Porter Trio’s CD out by Jazz Fest 2017 and hopefully a CD with the Foundation of Funk that features Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste and Myself using guest guitarists and keyboardists. These are both exciting projects and I am enjoying writing arranging and playing new music, no resting on the past I am looking forward to putting out some great new grooves.
