I could not agree more. Especially the frat boys in BSM. That is the best damn video and really brings tears to my eyes when I hear some riffs and stuff. The Down w/ Disease is sweet and Waste, and that sweet riff for a brief moment from Golgi. The Brian and Robert makes me cry. I am fascintated by their lyrics. I can't find any sites on interpretations of the songs. They may sound dumb to most people, but they are too shallow anyway if they can't even give them a shot. The words are truly original and are jsut another element that sets them aside from any other so-called band. I also can't ever get tickets. Do you recommend mail-order or anything? I have most of the SBD legs and that is why I love these guys. Cliffor Ball is a classic as you know. Do you know of any other easy-to-find legs from 95 or 96? I just wish they would allow SBD since they keep getting so much cooler. Their music will never get old!

Yours, Jeff

well written. i have often found it annoying that people judge Tom's lyrics as simple or stupid or what have you... ...to me its part of the appeal. turning onto Phish in '91 it was a welcome change from the introspection and sentiment of Hunter or Dylan. I say only that Tom's lyrics (and Phish for that matter) are what they are. They hold an equally mysterious place for me as the mystery of a Terrapin does (Terrapin was revealed to me one stoney after-school-afternoon long ago and i havent been the same since, no joke)... the I-ching statment rings true for me as well, because (some of) the lyrics don't make sense right off the bat they are open to interpritation as we go... ...it is ashame i've heard so many people say they cant get past the lyrics in regards to Phish... they are indeed missing out. but hey, it's not for everyone. i guess i'm just really glad that my girlfriend Brooke put on 'the squirming coil' for me that one night in Shepard Kollock Park when i was 10 years younger than i am now. thanks B!

Phish.net has it as:

As he saw his life run away from him,
thousands came along (a thousand ran along?)
chanting words from a song (psalm?).

I'd say it's undecided at best.

Kudos on a well-written, much needed column. Just one comment: The lyrics that you quoted for the song Curtain are incorrect. The correct line is in fact "Chanting words from a psalm", not "Chanting words from a song.".

This is a common mistake. I thoroughly enjoyed the piece.

Take Care,

Josh

One of the best articles I have read at Jambands.com and I feel the same way about phish's lyrics.

I'm testing a new idea for Jambands. You can comment on my column (or, if Dean likes it, any article in Jambands) through this form. Enjoy
