Good Mornin Funk
by: Yonah Korngold

I was the alleycat
the snake
that beat boxes throughout the city
after midnight
to steal reality
from the shopping cart realists
that had poisoned my life

Locust Street on fire
and I was Niro
playing the spastic fiddle
singing songs about the Big River
laughing hysterically
pouring my gasoline all over my Rome

Crossed Chestnut and
passed a man sitting on a footstool
playing the harmonica
oozing Langston Hughes swaggering weariness
all over my daydream

I paused
and stared this bluesman right in the sour eye
somewhere between foggy city hall and foggy train station

I looked at this man with
Langston Hughes hands one more time
and bid farwell
for where I was goin I wouldn't need no
harmonica or twelve bar blues
for I had something better,
I had the electric night.

for somehow during that night
my life had become a Vinnie Van Gogh daydream
mixed with a funky bass beat.

That night both me and Vinnie learned somethin,
we learned that there are some things that will always exist with each
other eternally...

1. The sounds of street corner musicians
2. The sick colors of fluorescent neon lit city

Oh Liquid Soul
how did you turn my heart into fire
and steal Uncle Sam's top hat and cane
and exchange it for a fur coat and sunglasses
for it is you that makes me realize
that Homer really wrote the Iliad
strutting madly down city streets
muttering spastic grooves off the top of his head.
