Title: "Take the Damn Flier" or "Words From the Flier Guy"
by Mickey Fortune mickeyfort@aol.comText:
Hey, you might know me. I'm what they call in this business a grassroots promoter, better known as that, "annoying guy in your way trying to give you a flier filled with shows you think you don't want to go see." You're probably the same person who misses their favorite band when they come to town because you had no idea they were there. Well, guess what, I knew they came through and I went to the show. It was listed on the flier that you said, "you already had." You always seem to have the fliers I have. Yeah right, not possible. As you say this I think, I just made this damn flier ten minutes before I came to the show, but, you say, you already got one. Maybe, just maybe, you broke into the office and stole one from the copier when my back was turned, but face it, no you didn't. It all comes down to "no you didn't." No you didn't get the flier and no you didn't get to see your favorite band. Well, boo hoo to you. There, I hope they played your favorite song. No, I hope they played all your favorite songs twice, dedicated them to you, and then asked you to jump on stage and sit in on the congas. Well, too bad and where were you? Sitting on the sofa staring mindlessly at re-runs of the A- Team. Mr T. gets all the respect. Maybe I should say, "take my flier fool," and then blind you with my gold chains as I stuff a flier into your hand.
Sure, I may not have long hair or dress "hip", or even know my name half the time when I'm passing out fliers, but these fliers aren't for Hanson or the Spice Girls. They're for shows you want to see. They're made and distributed by people who love the music just as much as you do. So in closing, do me a favor. Next time you exit a show and see a half frozen hand outstretched offering you a flier, kick him in the ass and tell him to get a real job, or, take the flier. No, you better do both. Yeah, that sounds good.
Peace I'm outta here,
Mickey Fortune
