Dana Monteith- The Super Man Curse is an actual line from some news
broadcast. I had seen where they were talking to Nicholas Cage about being
the next Superman, which never came to pass, I guess. They asked him if he
was worried about the Superman curse. This was after Christopher Reeves
had his accident. I was like "Ahh yeah, that's a sick idea." I'm just
going to go for the completely harsh, kind of satirical Superman
thing. Superman is such an icon, especially for the end of the 20th
century.
Then just like with a lot of my stuff, I juxtaposed a number of ideas. I'm a big fan of the Atomic Cafe, and I wanted to fit that in. I
grabbed an idea from a Kurt Vonnegut story, "Venus on the Halfshell." I
also have this problem where many of my friends end up going out with my
ex-girlfriends. So I was thinking about some of these relationship
problems, so in the song there's this person who can't be in love and then
she goes off and marries my best friend. It all kind of fit in both
lyrically and melodically. There are some pretty weird ideas in there. I
don't ever set out to write lyrics with a story in mind. I like to paint a
picture more than tell a story with a song.
