Big Sky Regional Report
Edited by David Shulman

Hi, Just returned from the 110 degrees (heat index) heat/humidity which is know as July in St. Louis.

Whoever invented air conditioning is truly my hero!!!

Not only is the temperature hot in St. Louis but so was last nights Lesh/Dylan show (set list below). It's wonderful to see how Lesh's current Friends have really jelled together since I last heard them play at Phil's 60th B-Day show. While filling Jerry's shoes (or Kimock's) it a tough bill, Robben Ford is doing a formidable job of doing so. Goose bumps/cold chills were the rule as the wonderful set closed with Crazy Fingers>Morning Dew on what was the eve of the 5th anniversary of the Dead's last show and perhaps no coincidence why "Wish You Were Here" made it's way into the set.

The Allman Brothers hit the St. Louis stage several weeks ago and I must say Jimmy Herring filled in quite nicely for Dickey Betts. Yours truly seriously considered skipping the show upon the announcement Betts would be absent, but I must say I was very glad I attended. Not only did we get a "Mountain Jam", but a rockin' "You Don't Love Me" and then the totally unexpected (without Dickey) "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" to close the long set. You might want to change your mind if you decided to skip this summers tour, as seeing Derek Trucks/Jimmy Herring exchange licks was worth my price of admission.

Have a wonderful July/August, as there are many fine tours and festivals to keep a jamband lover happy. Be safe :)

Nebraska Report - June 2000

Paul L. Pearson, Ph.D. Pro@strangepleasures.com

The end of an era took place when Omaha's Saddle Creek Bar closed on July 1. Open in some form since 1890, the Creek was one of Omaha's favorite neighborhood hangouts-famous for footlongs and friendly fun. A biker bar in the 70's, the Creek became one of the better live music venues in Omaha in the 80's and 90's-a proving ground and steady gig for local groups and a stopover for regional and national acts. Earl Bates hosted the Wednesday night acoustic jam for nearly 10 years, giving new bands and solo acts a place to try out their stuff. The Creek also became the home of the jamband scene in Omaha with the Grateful Dudes (now S.O.U.P.) and later Strange Pleasures holding the Thursday night slot. Strange Pleasures took it a step farther, helping to bring more jambands to Omaha-The Disco Biscuits, the Big Wu, Snake Oil Medicine Show, HairyApesBMX, Allset, Zen Mothers, Sun Cured Red and Allset all found their way to the Creek in 1999 and 2000. The closing of the Saddle Creek leaves a hole in the music culture of Omaha.

Despite a lack of any mention by the local media, 150 friends filled the tables and dance floors for the final live public performance at the Saddle Creek on June 30. The Get opened the show with a smoking set of their funk/rock/blues, with Elmo from S.O.U.P. joining on guitar for a couple of songs. They definitely had the crowd ready to rock when Strange Pleasures took the stage. The set was full of memorable jams and old favorites. Elmo sat in on guitar, J from the Get joined on congas and drums, and local mystic Michael 'mojopo' Payor added his harp to the festivities. The dance floor was full when the light was turned on for the final time.

Minnesota Report

by Scott Thornburg

This past month was a slow time for big-name acts in the Twin Cities, with one noteworthy exception: String Cheese Incident. They rolled into the Minnesota Zoo amphitheatre on Sunday, June 25th as part of a seven consecutive nights through the Midwest. It's a great little outdoor venue with a pond behind the stage. I'm unsure of the capacity, but even from the last row there's a good view. The band played a fantastic show with great improvised jams. Highlights include Voodoo Chile> On the Road, and Born on the Wrong Planet. Due to a 10:30 curfew, the band took a very abbreviated set break, and upon returning, it was just Billy on guitar with Travis kneeling in front of him, playing percussion on the body of Billy's acoustic. They played Elvis' Wild Ride with a brief detour into Moondance. The rest of band returned to close the show with I Know You Rider sandwiched between verses of Roll Over. They really stretched out more than in past shows I've seen. Kyle Hollingsworth had fantastic night on keys. Even the ducks in the pond behind the stage were grooving! Stay tuned next month for reviews of Roger Waters, Phish, Phil & Friends/Dylan, Widespread Panic and Dark Star Orchestra.
