Midwest Regional Report

Hey everybody...We hope you're all enjoying your summer so far. With the absolute overload of music going on, we are seriously short on reviews this month...oh well, it's not much of a surprise, since we all seem to be in a cycle of seeing music, recovering, and seeing music again...there's no time to write any reviews! You can't complain about that, so it's all good.

We thought we'd try something a little different this month and present a more exhaustive Notable Dates section. This way you can rely on our Midwest column to serve as an actual music calendar for each state we cover.

As far as news goes, we'll go out on a limb and say that the buzz around the Midwest has been about the Phish and Further tours...as of this writing, Phish has descended upon the Midwest and Further's stop in Columbus is still unconfirmed. Hopefully next month we'll have some reviews of the Phish shows and whatnot.

As is usually case, if you've recently seen a show you'd like to review or have some tour dates from a local act that hasn't made our radar yet, please send them our way: midwest@jambands.com. We'll see you at the show... Todd & Tim

In Case You Missed It

String Cheese Incident
6/21-22/00, Navy Pier, Chicago

by David and Danielle Crooks

Another incident, another fulfilling experience. I caught the two shows at the beautiful, small Navy Pier outdoor theatre this week. The 3rd and 4th incidents for me personally. I can't say enough about the groove these guys get into during the show. I find myself not even paying attention to the individual songs, one just naturally flows into the other like it was always meant to be that way. My thoughts get a million miles away in the most uplifting way during these shows, it's fantastic. The band seemed excited to be back in the US and on tour, and the crowd responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. The first night was the Summer Solstice, and almost on cue near the end of the second set, fireworks exploded over the lake and lit up the sky. The band seemed to like it as well. The second night, over 18 crowd, was particularly cool. The band broke out several new songs that were fantastic! Instant classics, glad to have been part of the maiden voyage. The crowd really got into it and the band was ON! I normally don't like to compare bands, and I haven't seen Phish since NYE, but SCI seems to be the most consistent, positive, spiritual jam band. WSP can be earth-shattering on a good night, but I am definitely 4 for 4 on killer shows from SCI. The funkadelic folkswingingjazz spacingsonictornado kneeslappinghippiehop dance is the best here. On my way to two days at Devils Head, where SCI will be back in their element in a campground. The band was looking forward to a summer filled with camping almost every weekend. I suggest you do the same.
