What a month I'm having. Chris Duarte Group in KC, Strange Pleasures in St. Louis, Phish at Sandstone, CDG and the Doobies in Omaha, Lazy Summer Days festival in Colorado, SP at Quixotes in Aurora CO...now I'm off to Australia for two weeks.

The Lazy Summer Days Festival was held July 4th and 5th on the 1000 Peaks Ranch near Fairplay CO. This event was sponsored by the owners of the land (Russ and Donna) and Quixotes True Blue Café in Aurora CO. About 200 faithful (if you count dogs and band memebers) attended this kind little event in the Rockies. This was the first 'big' outdoor festival I've had the pleasures of 'running' sound for. With a lineup of nine bands over 20 hours, it became a battle against sleep more than anything sound or technical-related. Everything pretty much went off without a hitch, except the fact that it got a little cold during the night. The loyal crew resorting to a small bonfire about 8 feet from the board and much antifreeze throughout the evening. The daybreak brought heat rapidly and alternatively manning the board and sitting in the shade became the rule of the afternoon as the remaining bands played their sets for the campers, dogs and friends still hanging out listening.

The musical lineup was very good to excellent. Schwa, Sho' Nuff, Big Shark Jackson, Jyemo, Strange Pleasures, Meandering Blue, Sliquid, Population Zero, and Monkey Wrench all played during the 20 hour show. I had never had the pleasure of seeing any of the bands except Strange Pleasures and Meandering Blue, both from Nebraska-the rest from Colorado. Sho' Nuff caught my ear, as did Big Shark Jackson. If you're in the area, any of the bands on that list are a good catch for an evening's entertainment. I was amazed to find that many of the Colorado bands had a similar sound, perhaps more east coast-influenced than we're used to in Nebraska. Without exception, each band and the other soundmen were friendly, respectful of the equipment, very easy to work with and played and worked their butts off. There were no egos or 'whiny musicians' evident and everyone was genuinely supportive and interested in working together for the greater good in the future. With a lot of help at the right times, we kept things pretty much on pace, falling only an hour or so behind in the schedule.

My thanks to Jeff and Jamie, Russ and Donna, Jay and Phil, the rest of the Strange Pleasures crew and all the other people involved in making this small festival a truly wonderful experience and a pleasure to be 'working' at on my vacation. I'd especially like to thank every one for their kind comments about the sound and the sunrise tent tunes. I hope your festival experience was as wonderful as mine this month, and I can't wait until next year...

No worries, mate.

Take care,

Pro
