Midwest Regional Report
Edited by Natalie Guinsler - dagny_esque@yahoo.com
So much to see, so little time...
Okay, if you are reading this Midwest report, I am assuming you are located somewhere in America's Heartland. That being the case, where are your reviews? Surely, my take on all things musical is not entertaining, nor enlightening, enough to keep readers coming back month after month. Someone out there has something profound and prolific to say...how was Hookahville?...did anybody catch Adrian Belew as he passed through?...what about the Indianapolis Jazz Fest? Please, send me anything...the venue in your town with the cleanest bathrooms, information about your favorite local band, taper friendly bars and taper unfriendly bands...anything. Just remember, if you are sending me information about upcoming show dates be sure to send them only for shows after the 15th of the month...even though your submission deadline is the 4th, the new issue is not posted until the 15th.
Allman Brothers and Hot Tuna rip up Riverbend
June 29,1999 - Cincinnati, OHIt was surprising to me to see just a handful of folks on the lawn and in the pavilion as Hot Tuna stepped on-stage. Not surprising was seeing these same people awestruck as Jorma, Jack, Michael, Pete and Harvey blew through their delta-style blues. I could go on and on about how I think Jack is one of the most underrated bass players and how Jorma makes me want to dish out 500 buckaroonies to go to his guitar camp...blah, blah, blah. I'll spare you all and instead just give a nod to those who concur and encourage those lacking a Hot Tuna experience to try and catch one, soon.
As for the Allman Brothers...all I have to say is Derek Trucks is an amazing talent. There were a number of highlights in this show, with Derek and Dickey exchanging blistering leads on "Southbound" and "Blue Sky" (Dickey really stood out here). Other notable tunes included the new instrumental "JJ's Alley," as well as the revitalzied "Revival" and "Les Bres in A Minor."
