I'll be honest with you, I'm hard pressed to add anything meaningful to
this month's editorial page. Look below at David's message- it's timely,
it's succinct and it's good advice. However, this wouldn't be the editorial
page if the editor wasn't allowed to blather a bit.
The obvious topic this month is the Jammys. As you can imagine we're
pretty psyched not only about the event but also about everyone's response
to it. In many ways I see the Jammys as the culmination of much that has
happened both to this site and to the scene. The idea that the jambands
world encompasses such diverse players as Deep Banana Blackout, The Disco
Biscuits, the New Deal, Frogwings, Merl Saunders, John Scofield, Soulive
and the Slip is a wonderful thing. However, I also see this night as a
starting point as well. Let's work together to keep this scene vibrant and
vital. In particular (and this is a crusade of mine) don't forget to
support these bands out on the road- in addition to spreading tapes, good
words and salutary vibes be sure to pick up a group's latest disc, buy
some merch (who doesn't enjoy quality band merch- there was a time
when my wife suspected that my entire wardrobe had been purchased inside
shows and out in the lots- not true anymore, that's the beauty of the
internet, not worrying about where to place your setbreak scores during
the show), pick up advance tickets (to remind the mainstream promoters
that we are a force, albeit at times a dilatory one). As long as we remain
vigilant, take nothing for granted (least of all the bands and their
music) this scene will continue to thrive, and we can collectively
permagrin while we share it with the wider world on occasion.
Okay, enough from me. Good issue this month. See you on the 22nd. Take
David's advice below...
later days and peace,
Dean
Well here it is, 10:14 PM EDT on the 14th, and still no Editorial. What's a self respecting
webmaster to do? Why write one of course!
Bands are about to engage on their summer tours. With school being out of session,
many more people will be doing these tours. With this in mind, I ask you all to
be careful out there on the roads. Sure there's no snow to worry about, but please
try to make sure that your driver this summer is not impaired by drinking, drugs, or
(my own unfortunate favorite) lack of sleep. There will be some amazing fall tour
shows, and you wouldn't want to miss them.
See you on the road
David
