Want to subscribe and contribute to a moderated electronic mailing list for reviews of Jam Bands across the country? A moderated list for fans of improvisational rock and jazz who would like to share their thoughts on -- and read the thoughts of others on -- shows by "jambands" and jazz outfits across the country, but who are drowning in the information on and mail of newsgroups, websites, and mailing lists.

It is intended for people who LOVE to hear about what went down at shows by bands that they care about (e.g., Lesh and Friends, Phish, Dead-related, KVHW, String Cheese Incident, Galactic, Umphrey's McGee, JMP, Ominous Seapods, MMW, Disco Biscuits, Leftover Salmon, Zero, Living Daylights, Don Byron & Herbie Hancock, etc.), but who cannot keep up with all of the newsgroups, websites, and mailing lists.

People who regularly review the shows of their favorite band(s) on such lists/sites are strongly encouraged to keep this list's submission address (JAM-REVIEWS@onelist.com) in mind, even if you do not plan to subscribe to the list yourself. Your reviews are wanted and appreciated by those of us who may be unable to keep up with the list(s) that you contribute so thoughtfully to!

The list is moderated in order to keep reviews articulate and formatted in a readable style. This is NOT A DISCUSSION LIST, but rather an alternative to the multitude of lists that many of us wish we could keep up with. Ideally, there will be NO MORE THAN TWENTY or so reviews/posts sent out EVERY WEEK. If reviews begin pouring in at an average of greater than 20 a week, however, then the list will be limited in the future only to reviews of jambands with wide appeal in the improvisational razz community ("wide appeal" to be determined based on a poll of subscribers). In the event that multiple reviews of the same show are submitted at around the same time, then either several reviews, or the review that is most eloquent and thoughtful in the opinion of the list's moderators, will be forwarded to the list.

To subscribe to the list, send an email to JAM-REVIEWS-subscribe@onelist.com from the email address that you would like subscribed, or visit http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/Jam-Reviews.

I hope that this list becomes a time-saving way to keep up with the shows of improvisational rock and jazz groups nationwide.

Hookahville '99 - Buckeye Lake, Ohio

This was definitely the best Hookahville ever! Ratdog played a weak set, IMO, breaking out many of Bobby's new songs. Hookah came out and played an excellent 2-hour electric set culminating in Dave Ellis and Bob Weir walking out for a Throwing Stones closer! It rivaled any Other Ones version, I thought. You could tell the band was psyched to be backing up one of their heroes, and they rocked the house. The encore was a very energetic Sugar Magnolia, again with Bobby and Dave Ellis. The blistering heat and the previous evening's partying kept many people from the Jazz Mandolin Project's set - boy, did they miss out! JMP played quite a few segues and jams, at one point going non-stop for about 50 minutes. Hookah's first set was long (2 hours) but weak - with the except of a 20-minute Viper's Din with Jamie Masefield to close the set. The second set was solid, and the encores were fun. The guy who always sings an encore at Hookahville rode onto the stage on a motorcycle wearing a suit with flashing red light bulbs to sing Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good To Me So Far". Tripped out, and big fun! My only complaints would be for them to dig the quad speakers (they are so completely out of phase that people were getting dizzy) and hold off on the fireworks until the music is over. There was a small group of police inside the venue, but they were very polite and kept to themselves - I didn't see a single bust. The weather was beautiful, and with Bobby up on the stage at Buckeye Lake singing Sugar Magnolia with a full, jamming band behind him.... it sure brought back some good memories. - Mike W.

I am programming a jambands channel for an online music service and am looking for CDs. If you play in, are affiliated with, or know of a jamband type group who would like exposure for their music, please contact me for further info.
