SIDE-BAR: Grammy Winners
(A Companion Piece to "De-jamming The Grammys")

by Benjy Eisen
from the Kitchen Sink Files

Of course you're well aware of Santana's sweep of the Grammys as the guitarist took home a record breaking eight Grammy's for Supernatural - the album itself won nine, including the eight given to Santana.

The Roots took home the honor for Best Rap Duo/Group Performance. Jam Band fans were introduced to the Roots last year at the Berkfest when they took to the main stage and showed live music fans that hip-hop bands can indeed jam, play real instruments and tear the roof off the sucka.

While Bela Fleck was nominated for Best Bluegrass Album for his excellent Bluegrass Sessions, the winner was, respectably, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. Other nominees for that category included The Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza (which included Sam Bush, David Grisman, Ronnie McCoury) and The Mountain by Steve Earle and The Del McCoury Band.

Susan Tedeschi, who appeared on-stage with Phil and Friends this year, was a nominee in the Best New Artist category, along with the critically acclaimed Macy Gray. Both lost to Christina Aguilera, who also beat Kid Rock and Britney Spears for the win.

Solo Flecktone, Victor Wooten, was a nominee for the Best Jazz Contemporary Performance, for his album Yin-Yang (Inside by David Sanborn was the winner).
