Midwest Regional Report

Geez...is it Spring yet? I don't know about all of you, but I could use some fresh air...and some outdoor shows. Winter is seemingly fighting to hang on, but we're almost into festival season, and it's all down hill from there.

Hookahville's spring line-up has been revealed, as Acoustic Productions has announced that Willie Nelson, Dr. John, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Radiators and Donna the Buffalo will be share the stage with ekoostik hookah at Frontier Ranch this Memorial Day weekend. They all look to be fine additions to the distinguished list of Hookahville guests.

And while only one of you was out writing a review, a few of you did give us a heads-up on some of the more interesting acts out there. Bands like the new crop of the Milwaukee mafia including Zigzag, Plex, Homemade Jam, Tim Cook & The Riverwesterners, Freshwater Collins, and Mississippi Cactus deserve your support, so get out and get down. We'd also like to recognize the talent of The Paul Wertico Trio as well as that of Zambow out of Illinois, Groovulous Glove from Wisconsin, and JEB from Indiana, who gave us a little schooling by sending us their CDs.

Thanks to Phil Simon and his thoughts on the Madison Funk All Stars, so we're not completely without reviews (thanks, Phil). This doesn't let the rest of you off of the hook, though. Help spread the word of your favorite local band by expanding on their finer points through a review. They'll be glad you did. We'll see you at the show.

In Case You Missed It

Madison Funk All Stars
Barrymore Theatre
Phat Phunktion
Mama's Dig Down Marching Band
Smokin with Superman
hosted by Dave Gray
by Phil Simon

For the second year in a row, Phat Phunktion teamed up with two of the best local bands in Madison to create a show larger than life- the Madison Funk All Stars show at the Barrymore Theatre. The three bands got together and created a compilation disc featuring material from all three bands. Admission price got everyone who came a free disc! Now that is marketing!

The first band, Smokin with Superman, was a classic funk ensemble. Though I had never seen them before, I was impressed with their mixture of funk, hip-hop, and rock. I guess their normal lead singer had a kidney infection (ouch!) and they relied on their MC most of the night. They were good, and I think that seeing them with their full line-up would be even better.

Then came Mama's Dig Down Brass Band. This is an interesting band. They are a Dixieland marching band- with marching bass drum, marching snare, Tuba- the whole works! But instead of playing Dixieland, they played Funk music. This was great, and the whole place was rocking by the end of their set.

Funnyman and local radio personality Dave Gray kept everyone in stitches throughout the night, and got the crowd pumped up calling for Phat Phunktion. The theatre grew dark and before the curtain parted, the band was laying down stadium sized sounds that fore-told of their monster set to come. The band hit the stage, and the funk started flying!

This is one great band! Four piece horn section that is masterfully planned, four different lead singers, incredibly tight rhythm section with percussion, drum set, and bass all kickin it together. I had very high expectations based on everything that I had heard, but I was not disappointed.

The band played a mixture of material from their last release, Here We Go and songs from their release due out next year. They clearly ruled the night, eliciting huge responses from the sold out crowd whenever they waved their hands. The band is an old school mix of funk and r&b, plus some hip-hop and rap. The r&b flavor rules the roost, with smooth vocals and perfect orchestrations. I was especially impressed with Vince Jesse's rendition of their original "Into Your Groove." Soul, I mean SOUL! Courtney Larsen came out from behind the trombone, and was dubbed the First Lady of Phat Phunktion. She did a great rendition of Groove is in the Heart by Dee-Lite that was a real crowd pleaser. This band is unique because they have no troubles supporting whomever is in the lead chair at any moment- with the other 8 members lending their full support without overstepping. The encore brought all three bands onstage at the same time. It was like old school P Funk with dozens of players up at once. They even dragged Dave Gray out for a spirited rap, and the youngsters from the front of the audience came onstage to dance and lead the cheers. By the end of the night, everyone was exhausted, and Madison, Wisconsin took the title of Capital of the Funk world for the night. I can't wait until next year.
