The Tao of Wu
by Jason Fladager - flash@cabooze.com - The Big WuWhat a strange month this has been: thanks to VH-1 I'm better affiliated with the Bee Gee's than I ever have been, I slipped on the stairs and dropped my little girl on the cement basement floor (its comin' Dean...thank God 14 mo. old baby girls craniums are so soft they almost bounce!), and I'm finally leaving my 20 hr/wk posterboy job at the Cabooze nightclub to go FULLTIME as a musician...something I have been secretly hoping for. I've decided to forgo discussing human behavior in a scene that tolerates just 'bout anything and stick to Big Wu related topics like dry tourdates for this article. Well anyway, its nice to know people are actually reading my stuff. Thanks for all of the email this last month, especially from MT.
The Big Wu is finishing up mixing our second CD at Latch Lake Studios in Eagan. Things are going well although this project has taken over a year now and things we did a year ago, we can do better now...so that poses a little dilemma. We are on the verge of signing with an up and coming label. We have got some great shows coming up that I was hoping to take a second and talk about...
We are doing our second run to Colorado starting in Ft. Collins on March 26 and going all the way to Telluride on April 3. Actually tourdates are on our website: http://www.thebigwu.com.
On Friday April 9th we are doing our first mid-sized theatre show at the Barrymore in Madison. We are all very excited about this one since many of our friends and heroes have played this venue. Its all ages so if you happen to be in Madison, we'd love to see you down there. We're also hoping to cut a potential live CD that night.
The other big show of the Spring for us is our second annual "Big Wu Family Reunion". Its Memorial Day Weekend in Harmony Park. Harmony Park is ten minutes north of Albert Lea MN and just over an hour south of Minneapolis. It is THE kindest place to see a show in Minnesota. More like a music "garden". We are printing 1500 tickets and hope for the best! This doesn't just include family from Minnesota, but FAMILY from all over! We have some great music lined up for the weekend (just can't say right now because offers are still flying but they are all well known bands that you would would see at a HSMF or a GOTV). The Big Wu will also do two shows on Saturday and Sunday night. We're hoping to have a listening sample of the new CD that weekend as well. Its all too excited. I'll keep everyone posted on the weekend each month as bands get confirmed.
This summer looks good too. We're hitting the road in June and heading Eastward toward Gathering of the Vibes. Thanks to Ken Hays, we have an opportunity to play for some folks out at this festival. Touring around that area is in the works too. [site editor's note: it looks like the Wu will be appearing on selected dates of the Jambands.com Tour- more information to come SOON...] July 4th we come home to play some midwest dates and then its back Eastward to the Berkshire Mt. Music Fest. In late September we hope to tour up and down the West Coast. We have been confirmed to play High Sierra's Stafford Lake Music Festival with David Grisman on Oct 2-3. Hope to see some folks out for that one.
Not to much new really. Its been great writing for jambands. I'm excited for this scene and really strongly hope we can all join together and support this movement of music. The trends are in favor of us. People are tired of the crap that's out there. What ever happen to good entertainment eh? The best shows on TV are primetime cartoons!!! Ah well... good things to come. I can feel it in mah bones!
April Fool's Day we are happy to be playing the Fox Theatre in Boulder Colorado with Chief Broom. Its our first appearance at this venue and from what I hear, its a great place. Hope to see some CO folks out for our tour.
Next month I'll try and write a better article. This more like an update. Like I said earlier, I dropped my little girl this morning as I slipped down the stairs and its been hectic. Bounce on.
