Things are getting interesting. It seems that many more people are
taking a gander at our scene. Over the past few weeks, there have been a
number of feature stories in mainstream publications. The
May issue of Jazz Times presents Medeski Martin & Wood on the cover with a
story inside entitled "One Nation Under a Groove." This piece offers
interviews with MMW, John Scofield, members of Deep Banana Blackout,
Living Daylights, and others. Phish graces the cover of the June Downbeat,
which presents articles on "Jazz, and the 'Jam Band' Scene." (and by the
way, if you read Isaac Josephson's insightful essay on jambands and jazz
lineage- I agree with you, I didn't coin the term jam band- although all
of us here at the site have helped to popularize it). Finally, Mike
Snider's May 5 USA Today piece also examined this music (and even
described the Jammys as well, sweet).
It will be interesting to see what follows. I am sure that some people are
tense already. I can understand it can be a drag for hardcores when
more people come out to shows and bands have to move to larger venues. But
look at it this way- often it means better sound and production as well.
Plus, many of these groups can use the help. It's tough to make it as a
touring band in the country today, especially when mainstream radio isn't
interested in promoting your music. A few more fannies will only help
those bands keep it going so that we can hear their music (of course we
can all assist too by purchasing discs and merch). While I'm ranting, one
more quick one- when it comes to these newcomers, give
them the benefit of the doubt, take some
initiative and help indoctrinate newbies, don't treat the like outsiders.
I'm sure you remember how it was (of course if it turns out that they have
no respect for the music and the scene then feel free to tongue-lash).
Okay, that's my soapbox for this month. Oh wait, since I'm still on it-
one more (unrelated) thing- don't forget to bring ear plugs and wear them
on occasion (especially club shows). Take this advice from a man who
suffers from tinnitis (ringing in the ears- a truly sad state of affairs,
although it is only mild in my case).
What else? Why The Jammys of course. Stay tuned. We should be able to
announce the line-up and the list of nominees soon. Tickets will go on sale
in the days to come. If you're on the email list you'll find
updated info there.
I reckon that's all. See you at a show this month- I'll be the
soapbox-abetted, earplug-donning, jammys-lauding lad.
later days and peace,
Dean
P.S As a mother's day treat I was going to let my mom write the editorial
but it turned out she wasn't all that hip to the above (but she's still
swell by me).
