Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey kicked off its April residency last night at Harpers Ferry in Allston, MA. The series features a number of special guests performing with the group and last night guitarist Steve Kimock took the stage for the majority of the show. (This past fall, Kimock invited Jacob Fred bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Jason Smart to play at his Halloween shows). The set began with just Kimock (electric guitar) and bassist Reed Mathis (acoustic guitar) playing two songs. The rest of the band soon emerged for Kimocks Its Up to You. The evening ranged in style, from Kimocks melodic phrasing to Jacob Freds signature freak out atonality. The set also included JFJOs aptly titled Thelonious Monk Is My Grandmother and the spontaneous instrumental George Bush is a Liar. Kimock will join the group again tonight at the Mercury Lounge in New York City, as the band begins its Wednesday night residency in the Big Apple (Groove Collectives Jay Rodriguez will also sit in).
Upcoming Jacob Fred guests will include Sam Kininger (Soulive, The Squad), George Garzone (The Fringe), Dean Bowman (Screaming Headless Torsos), David Fiuczynski, and The Slip.
