Bassist Noel Redding, best known for his work with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, has died. Redding passed away Sunday, according to his record label’s website, although no other details have been released. He was a member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience from 1966, when the trio formed, until 1969. Redding later formed Fat Mattress, playing guitar instead of bass, and eventually The Noel Redding Band, which released two albums on RCA, 1975s Clonakilty Cowboys and 1976s Blowin. In 1996, Noel wrote a book titled Are You Experienced?, which includes diary entries and rare photographs. The title is the same as the landmark Hendrix album that features classics such as Purple Haze, Fire, Foxey Lady and Hey Joe (with Reddings famous gear-shifting bass line).

The official Jimi Hendrix has posted the following:

We at Experience Hendrix mourn the loss of Noel Redding. His contributions to the Jimi Hendrix Experience shall never be forgotten. Our prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. – The Hendrix Family
