Hot off the heels of the Pure Jerry live series, Rhino Records will issue ‘After Midnight’ on September 28. The sixteen-song set captures a Jerry Garcia Band performance from Union, NJs Kean College, which took place on February 28, 1980. This incarnation of JGB features bassist John Kahn, keyboardist Ozzie Ahlers, drummer Johnny De Foncesca, and, on select tracks, the evenings opening act, Robert Hunter. Choice cuts include Jimmy Cliff’s ‘The Harder They Come, Hunters Promontory Rider, and, of course, JJ Cales After Midnight.
Garcias Grateful Dead work will also receive a new coat of polish when the new box set ‘Beyond Description (1973-1989)’ hits stores this October. A companion set of sorts to ‘The Golden Road (1965-1973),’ this multi-disc collection will collect the Deads post-Warner Brothers output, featuring 161 songs, over half of which are unreleased.
In addition to studio outtakes and alternative recordings of classic cuts, ‘Beyond Description (1973-1989)’ will revisit the Deads classic 1980s live albums, ‘Reckoning’ and ‘Dead Set.’ Each recording will be expanded to two-disc, including additional concert material left off each sets original CD issue.
The Dead closed out the Wave that Flag tour last night in Atlanta, GA. During the groups drum jam, various crew members joined in the fray, as an extended thank you of sorts. Tonight, hard touring Dead-guitarist Warren Haynes will kickoff the second leg of the Allman Brothers summer outing in New Hampshire.
