Flying Circus, a new conglomerate of recognizable Wetlands alumni, made its debut at Brooklyn, NYs The Hook last Saturday. And, while the events billing listed the Disco Biscuits Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner, RANAs Scott Metzger and the Duos Joe Russo, Flying Circus turned out to be a quintet, also featuring Kevin Kendrick. Best known as Russos former vibraphone and turntable foil in Fat Mama, Kendrick has kept a relatively low profile as of late, gigging occasionally throughout New York. Nodding to Fat Mamas seminal mixture of electronics and free-jazz, Flying Circus offered a mixture of jazz, techno and rock, courtesy of Metzger. In addition to nodding to Herbie Hancock and the Muppets, Flying Circus also offered a birthday tribute to the evenings guest of honor, Aron Magner. According to Brownstein, who narrated much of the evening, Saturdays performance marked the first time Russo and Kendrick had performed onstage together in almost five-years.
