Last night, Dave Grisman performed his first concert backed by Old School Freight Train. Self-proclaimed ‘Dawg musicians’ themselves, Old School Freight Train performed a set of its own material before backing Grisman for an hour at New York’s Town Hall. During the group’s collective encore, Grisman also invited some old-time friends onto the stage: mandolinist Andy Statman and guitarist Jon Scholle. Statman and Scholle joined the ensemble for a version of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition,’ which included an extended mandolin breakdown. Longtime Grisman fans, OSFT hand-picked the evening’s set, which drew from throughout the Dawg Musician’s repertoire. Grisman will perform again with Old School Freight Train on Philadelphia’s World Cafe Radio Show today and Friday in Cambridge, MA.
