The Dave Matthews Band closed out its extended summer tour last night with a special Katrina benefit concert at Red Rocks. In addition to a full-set from the group, the benefit featured performances by the John Butler Trio and the Neville Brothers, as well as several surprise guests. Trumpeter Rashawn Russ (Soulive, Yerba Buena) appeared at the outset of the group’s set for ‘Recently,’ returning a few songs later for signature guest number ‘Jimi Thing.’ Ross also appeared during a jam session based around Bob Marley’s ‘Exodus’ alongside Robert Randolph and keyboardist Ivan Neville. Randolph and Ross then were joined by longtime band associate David CasT Castiglione for a set-closing version of ‘Louisiana Bayou.’ Ross also returned for the two song encore of ‘Smooth Rider’ and ‘Too Much.’
