There are very few keyboard players who can inspire Dr. John to give up his bench but last night at Central Park SummerStage one such musician did so. Indeed, Dr. John started strumming when joined by fellow New Orleans native Allen Toussaint, one of many playful moments at the Hurricane Katrina Benefit. DJ Logic spun between sets, with Soulive commanding the stage for the final ninety minutes backing a number of artists, including Angelique Kidjo and Dar Williams (Soulives Eric Krasno, Alan and Neal Evans perform on Williams new disc My Better Self). The show closed out with a version of Marvin Gayes Whats Going On with Cassandra Wilson, Bettye LaVette, Ivan Neville, Hubert Sumlin, Corey Glover and Vernon Reid all taking the stage. Producer Peter Shapiro, who compared the scope and the logistics of the night to the Jammys, had no official money figure but with thousands in attendance, donations will be signficant.
