Its rare that southern rock icons Widespread Panic and the Drive-By Truckers cross paths, but this year Spreadheads have had several opportunities to see the titans join forces. One such opportunity occurred this weekend when the Drive-by Truckers opened for Widespread Panic at Antioch, TN’s Starwood Amphitheater and Macon, GA’s Macon Centreplex. On Friday, guitarist Drive-by Truckers guitarist Jason Isbell joined in on ‘None of Us Are Free’ three songs into the group’s second set. A night later, Drive-by Truckers pedal steel player Johnny Neff enhanced ‘Don’t Wanna Lose You,’ while the group’s frontman Patterson Hood took command on ‘Come Together.’ Longtime band associate Randall Bramblett also played saxophone earlier in the show on ‘Pickin’ Up The Pieces’ and ‘Down.’
Collaborations continued to take place Sunday night. While in Savannah, GA, Widespread Panic invited John Keane out on guitar for a number of tunes including ‘Chainsaw City,’ ‘Fishwater’ and ‘Maggot Brain.’ Keane also played slide on ‘Sleeping Man’ during the group’s encore. Widespread Panic play tomorrow at Boca Raton, FL’s Mizner Park Amphitheatre.
