The North Mississippi Allstars are Screwed (and Chopped)
When hes not behind the kit with the North Mississippi Allstars, Cody Dickinson moonlights as a gangsta-rap label owner. So it makes sense that the drummer recently entered the studio to remix several cuts off the Allstars new Electric Blue Watermelon album. For his remixes, Dickinson teamed with DJ Jimmy D, a proponent with the fledgling screwed-and-chopped sound. Popular in the hip-hop world, this remix process slows the songs tempo and applies various DJ techniques such as skipping beats, scratching and stop-time, as well as sends portions of the music through stand-alone effects to make a chopped-up version of the original song. The aptly titled Screwed and Chopped EP, featuring six remixed tracks, will be available December 6. The North Mississippi Allstars perform next November 6 at Ocean Springs, MS The Shed.
