The Katrina Trio Northeast, a new conglomerate of familiar faces—-Joe Russo, Skerik and New Orleans bassist James Singleton——performed its first concert last night at New York’s Knitting Factory’s Old Office. Perhaps reminiscing about his not so distant days performing at the Knit with another old friend, Russo invited longtime keyboard foil Marco Benevento onstage for a jazz-influenced jam partway through the Trio’s extended set. Benevento, draped in a long coat and knit hat, rushed the stage to play the melodica alongside his childhood friend, as he has on occasion with members of The Slip and the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Performing in front of a crowd of comprised of mostly friends and New Orleans faithful, The Katrina Trio Northeast also nodded to Black Sabbath during its loose, inspired set.
