Tribeca Farewell Russo-fest

On Saturday another New York rock venue, Tribeca, will close its doors to make room for high-priced condos. Last night, a handful of the club’s more familiar faces banded together for the first night of the venue’s three-day send off. Anchored by Joe Russo, the evening-long festivities featured mini-sets from three of the Duo drummer’s pickup projects: Danjaboots (which featured Russo performing outlaw songs with RANA guitarist Scott Metzger), Bustle in Your Hedgerow (Russo, Metzger, Marco Benevento and WEEN bassist Dave Dreiwitz performing Led Zeppelin covers) and Come on Falcon (Russo and Beneneveto playing pop songs on upright bass and acoustic guitar, respectively).

During Danjaboots’ opening set, Metzger invited his onetime Amphibian bandmate Chris Harford onstage to bid the club adieu, shortly before paying tribute to Tribeca/Wetlands talent buyer Jake Szufnarowski with ‘The Ballad of Flaco Dominguez.’ After performing such Led Zeppelin chestnuts as ‘All of My Love,’ ‘Moby Dick’ and ‘Immigrant Song’ with Bustle in Your Hedgerow, Benevento and Russo also offered a stealth Duo performance highlighted by a stripped down, ‘naked’ version of ‘Becky.’ Tonight, Hairy Apes BMX will perform a Tribeca Farewell concert before Willie Mays Haze and Second Movement officially close out the club Friday night.
