The Disco Biscuits are finally back on tour in the South, and their long awaited swing is looking to be quite a success. The group sold out their two night stand – and their first four Southern gigs have each been well attended.
The tour kicked off at Charlottesville’s Starr Hill on Tuesday and moved to the Rox club in Wilmington Wednesday. The band is working in fresh material like ‘Abraxas’ and ‘Step Inside,’ and fleshing out other songs introduced earlier this year like guitarist Jon Gutwillig’s ‘Strawberry Girl.’ Surprisingly, last night was the first time of the tour they touched on material from their recently released The Wind at Four To Fly CD, offering ‘Kitchen Mitts’ in the first set, and ‘Basis For a Day’ after a crafty jam that unfolded out of an explosive ‘Vassillios.’ Their hard core fans tend to like the segues, so moments like the ‘jam into Basis,’ the inverted version of ‘Munchkin Invasion’ that appeared in the middle of Wilmington’s ‘Shelby Rose,’ and last night’s encore during which ‘Plan B’ rose out in the middle of ‘Magellan’ with ease and grace (a sequence first performed at this reporter’s personal favorite Biscuit show several years ago) have garnered the most street buzz.
After the band completes the sold out Lincoln Theater stand, they will head to Charlotte’s NODA district for a Saturday night gig at the Neighborhood Theater. Next week their dates include three stops in the state that new Biscuit drummer Allen Aucoin used to call home, Georgia. They will perform at Atlanta’s Earthlink Live Thursday night, and they will set up shop at Athens’ Georgia Theater for a two night stand that begins Friday. Report by Rob Turner
