Over the weekend, Bob Weir joined the Waybacks for a series of performances at Wilkesboro, NC’s Merlefest. On Friday, Weir appeared with his longtime friends a handful of songs into their set, leading the group through such signature tunes as ‘Jack Straw,’ ‘Big River’ and ‘Cumberland Blues,’ as well as the Beatles’ ‘Tomorrow Never Knows.’ During Weir’s encore with the Waybacks, Gillian Welch and David Rawlins also sat-in on a cover of the Bob Dylan’s ‘Like a Rolling Stone.’ During the Lee Boys’ Merlefest set Saturday, the Grateful Dead guitarist also performed on ‘Everybody Needs Somebody.’ Later that day, Weir made another appearance this weekend with the Waybacks, singing on both Dead-classics like ‘Brown-Eyed Women’ and ‘El Paso’ and as a number of covers. Sam Bush later joined Weir and the Waybacks for a cover of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’ and, along with Welch and Rawlins, all-star versions of the Band’s ‘The Weight,’ Dylan’s ‘All Along the Watchtower,’ the Dead’s ‘Brokedown Palace’ and an encore take on ‘Like a Rolling Stone.’
