The current issue of Relix features a profile of longtime San Francisco personality Charlie Ayers, who has served as a chef for both the Grateful Dead and Google during his long career. Last night, Ayers celebrated his 40th birthday in style, hosting a number of notable Bay Area bands at San Francisco’s Great American. ALO opened the evening’s festivities, bringing Steve Kimock onstage for a handful of selection, including the Rolling Stones’ ‘Wild Horses.’ Martin Fierro, as well as New Monsoon’s Jeff Miller, Phil Ferlino and Brian Carey, also joined in on a cover of Jerry Garcia’s ‘They Love Each Other.’ New Monsoon played next, inviting Kimock and Fierro back out for such songs as ‘Afro Blue.’ The group’s set concluded with an all-star version of the Allman Brothers’ ‘In Memory of Elizabeth Reed’ featuring Kimock and ALO’s Dan Lebowitz. New Monsoon and ALO also offered Ayers a joint tribute in the form of the Beatles’ ‘Birthday.’ Kimock ended the evening’s festivities with a version of the ’50s instrumental ‘Sleepwalk.’
