Jake Cinninger of Umphrey’s McGee joined the members of Jack Straw on Friday Aug. 10th to play a tribute concert for the late Jerry Garcia. The event took place at Chicago’s Vic Theatre, bringing in nearly 800 attendees and just as many highlights. The show opened with a fluent ‘Eyes of The World’ that featured soaring trade-offs between Cinninger and Jack Straw keyboardist, Barry Brown. The lively crowd was offered a moment of rest when guitarists Jon Gram and Cinninger where left alone to perform a few acoustic songs, the highlight of which was a version of ‘Crazy Fingers.’ The show then rolled on with outstanding versions of ‘Shakedown Street,’ ‘Mr. Charlie’ and ‘Althea.’ Special guests such as Allie Kral (Cornmeal) and John Sabal (Hacknwheeze) provided excitement before Kris Myers (Umphrey’s McGee) stepped behind a kit and contributed to an outstanding version of ‘Drums’ alongside bandmate Cinninger. The show then came to a close with with a collective take on ‘Franklin’s Tower,’ capping a wonderful night of tribute and homage. Report by Brandon DeJaynes
