Papa Grows Funks keyboardist/namesake John ‘Papa’ Gros spent the past weekend in Eureka Springs, AR performing at Little Feats annual Feat Fest. As expected, the keyboardist also stepped up to the plate for a few songs, performing with the seminal jam-act on ‘Skin It Back’, ‘Don’t You Just Know It’, ‘The Weight’ and a particularly high-energy version of ‘Spanish Moon.’ Vince Herman, who opened both nights, also joined Little Feat for a handful of songs, including Willin, Dont Bogart That Joint and Long Black Veil. Later in the evening, Gros and Little Feats Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett stopped by Vince Herman and Friends evening jam at the neighboring Chelsea’s to play on selections like ‘Ophelia’ and ‘Red Neck Mother.’

On Sunday Gros hosted the festivals closing set with a solo performance featuring cuts from his solo CD, Days End, and a selection of New Orleans classics. Later, Little Feats Bill Payne joined Gros for 20 finger, two piano duets on Tennessee Jed’, ‘Tipitina’ and Dr. John’s ‘Such a Night.’ Tackett then helped Gros through Randy Newman’s ‘Louisiana 1927’ and a festival closing, New Orleans piano version of ‘Stealin.’ Gros will appear on the Garden Stage at the 50th annual Monterey Jazz Festival tomorrow, before rejoining Papa Grows Funk for a performance at San Franciscos The Independent this Saturday.
