Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings celebrated the release of their new album, 100 Days, 100 Nights, with a headlining appearance at New Yorks Apollo Theater Saturday night. A number of the Dap-Kings longtime associated enhanced the group throughout its set, including 20th Congress/Budos Band/occasional Dap-King saxophonist Cheme Gastelum, the Antibalas Horns and the female vocal group The Dansettes. Before Jones took the stage, soul singer Lee Fields led the Dap-Kings through a handful of songs and later returned for a high energy medley of James Brown numbers. Dap-Kings founder Gabriel Roth originally backed Fields in the 1990s with the Soul Providers, who were a precursor to the Dap-Kings. At one point Jones was brought in to supply backing vocals on one of Fields tracks, but Roth was so impressed with her voice that he began molding the soul singer as a solo artist in her own right. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will kick off an extended European tour in support of their album at Bordeauxs Theatre Du Vigean on October 16.
