Donna Jean & the Tricksters and the New Riders of the Purple Sage, two bands with legitimate ties to Jerry Garcia, celebrated New Years Eve together at Reading, PAs The Silo. Donna Jean & the Tricksters played first and ran through both new originals from their self-titled album, such as All I Gotta Say, and old favorites like Mission in the Rain. Next up, the New Riders took the stage, with Donna Jean & the Tricksters Mookie Siegel, who played keyboards throughout the night. Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, Tricksters guitarist Jeff Mattson and drummer Dave Diamond then joined the New Riders for Franklin’s Tower, Peggy-O, Willie and the Hand Jive, Panama Red and Take a Letter Maria. Later in the evening, all the members of both groups played together on Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad and, minus Godchaux-MacKay and Tricksters singer Wendy Lanter, Glendale Train.
After finishing their performance, the Zen Tricksters anchored an acoustic jam at the venue, which wove in a number of performers including the New Riders David Nelson and Godchaux-MacKay, among others, for sing-a-longs like Friend of the Devil, Long Black Veil, Catfish John and Ripple. The Zen Tricksters will appear at New Yorks Highline Ballroom tomorrow.
