Last year’s 17th Annual Berks Jazz Fest in Reading, Pennsylvania, featured the Soul Summit. Keyboardist Jason Miles (Miles Davis, Luther Vandross) drew together a range of artists to interpret some soul classics. Miles assembled this group with the stated intent of working with heralded session Reggie Young (Elvis Presley, Ray Charles), Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Average White Band) and Bob Babbitt (Funk Brothers and Marvin Gaye). For the Berks Jazz Fest performance he also drew in Karl Denson, Susan Tedeschi, Mike Mattison (Scrapomatic, Derek Trucks Band), Maysa, Richard Elliot (Tower of Power) and others. The results can be heard on Soul Summit, which Shanachie Entertainment will issue on January 22. At present this is the only way to listen to the group, as there are no announced plans for a second Summit.
