New Orleans famed Tipitina’s will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a string of performances scheduled to begin this evening. The influential club was founded in 1977 by group of young music fans, known collectively as The Fabulous Fo’teen, as a place for Professor Longhair to perform in his final years. The venue, which is named after one of Longhair’s most enigmatic songs, has survived an ever-changing musical climate, despite closing briefly in 1984. Tipitina’s will officially begin its anniversary celebration this evening with a performance by rising New Orleans rockers Rotary Downs. In the coming days, the venue will also host a number of special events, including shows by the OK Go and Bonerama (1/11), Walter ‘Wolfman’ Washington with special guests Marva Wright, Big Sam and Leo Nocentelli (1/12), A Celebration of the Life of Thorny Penfield (1/13), the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Soul Rebels and ReBirth (1/17), Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes and the Motet (1/18) and Super Cajun Fais Do Do (1/20). The club will also throw an official birthday party on January 19, featuring Allen Toussaint, Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen and other surprise guests.
