Page McConnell spent the weekend before Mardi Gras in Colorado, playing a pair of
shows with Russell Batiste Jr., Reed Mathis, Papa Mali, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and opening act Euforquestra. The gigs took place at the Boulder Theater and Denvers Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, respectively, and drew from an intriguing mix of Mardi Gras staples, classic-rock covers and other assorted homages, including Aint No Sunshine, Cissy Strut, a package of Hey Pocky A-Way and Not Fade Away and Iko Iko, among others. Though he remained in the background for much of the set, McConnell supplied lead vocals on a few songs, including Traffics Light Up For Leave Me Alone, a song Phish covered on occasion, and Bob Dylans Like a Rolling Stone. Both offerings were predictably described as funky, with Batiste taking the lead for much of the night. Though McConnell has no currently scheduled tour dates, Batiste will open a run of dates with PBS at San Diego, CAs Winstons this Thursday.
