The Derek Trucks Band has confirmed that its forthcoming studio album, Already Free, will hit stores on January 13, 2009. The album’s first single, a cover of Bob Dylan and The Band’s ‘Down in the Flood’ from The Basement Tapes, is also now available. The album was self-produced by Trucks and recorded in his Jacksonville, FL home studio over the past year.

‘This album was completely organic, Trucks said in a statement. We had no expectations. We just came down and started writing. Then one thing led to the next. I had all this time off so I just started calling up friends. And once the process started rolling and once we realized that we were onto something, we were writing tunes and all the sounds we were getting were amazing and it was starting to feel great. It felt like something was happening and we wanted to keep throwing musicians on the fire.’
In addition to the Derek Trucks Band, the album also features Trucks Allman Brothers Band bandmate Oteil Burbridge and wife Susan Tedeschi. Doyle Bramhall II also appears on a few tracks and even takes a stab at lead vocals.
Down In The Flood is now streaming. The Derek Trucks Band will appear at Harrisburg, PAs Whitaker Center on November 21.
