Juno What?! and A Herbie Hancock Tribute
Motet drummer Dave Watts has long demonstrated his affection for Herbie Hancock. In a 2007 site interview, he explained to Randy Ray, ‘The Motet did a Herbie Hancock tribute around five, six years ago at the Fox [Theatre in Boulder, Colorado] and it started our traditional Halloween theme night featuring a different artist every year. Herbie was probably my favorite out of all of them. Ive grown up loving his music so much that to be able to play a whole night of his stuff is really exciting for me. The keyboard player, Joey Porterwho is in this particular lineupis from Portland, Oregon. He had a group out there and theyve done this tribute for about three years now. When he moved out here, it seemed like a natural progression to put it together again and its highly successful.’
Watts and Porter will explore Hancock’s music a few times in February, along with Dominic Lalli (sax and keys) and bassist Paul McDaniel. They will appear this Saturday at Quixotes in Denver and the following weekend at Boulder’s B-Side Lounge (2/13) and Hodi’s Halfnote in Ft. Collins (2/14). In addition, Watts, Porter and Lalli will appear with their Juno What?! trio this coming Friday at the D-note in Arvada, CO.
