Phish will return to the studio next month, according to a recent article in The New York Times. The revealing piece goes onto say that the group has demoed approximately twenty new songs, but only plans to play the recent Trey Anastasio/Tom Marshall composition Backwards Down the Number Line in Hampton, VA (contrary reports indicate that the group may pull out a few additional new numbers this weekend). In addition, the interview confirms the longstanding rumor that the group talked to Billy Breathes producer Steve Lillywhite before announcing its reunion plans.

As for the groups three-night reunion run this weekend, the band members are said to be rehearsing a number of their early-opuses, including Split Open and Melt, Foam and Stash. Its like Tetris, Anastasio says of his role in writing the weekends 80-song setlist. It is one of those exercises in overthought that Phish is known for.
