The Derek Trucks Band opened its European tour last night in London at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. The group will travel from Great Britain to Denmark and then on to France, through the remainder of April. The performance drew on the band’s latest studio effort, Already Free, along with other DTB staples, including a notable take on ‘My Favorite Things’ (the Rodgers and Hammerstein song from The Sound of Music long associated with John Coltrane). Emerging at the close of the night was Trucks’ uncle Butch who appeared on drums, clad in a Moogis T-Shirt, for a version of ‘Anyday.’ The elder Trucks resides in the French countryside for part of the year and may have been in Europe to recharge his batteries before the Allman Brothers Band returns to the stage next month. Next up for the DTB is a gig on Friday night in Sheffield at Plug.
