Last night, Jackie Greene opened for Bob Weir & RatDog at Spokane, WA’s Martin Wolson Theater. As expected, Greene and his bandmates collaborated with the members of RatDog throughout the night. But, to the surprise of many, instead of a traditional sit in the two bands actually offered an interlocking set.

As Greene’s set came to a close, RatDog drummer Jay Lane, guitarist Mark Karan and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti all emerged for a cover of the Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down.” Weir, RatDog saxophonist Kenny Brooks and bassist Robin Sylvester then took the stage for the version of Grateful Dead’s “New Speedway Boogie”—a song Greene frequently covers with his own group. The two bands jammed on the tune for a few minutes, before moving into ”Smokestack Lightning.” According to the RatDog fan page RatDog.org, “Speedway> Smokestack” was a good solid 20 minutes of both bands at once. A hell of a feat pulled off by both crews.” Though his band left the stage, Greene remained for one final tune with RatDog: “The Music Never Stopped.” RatDog will appear at Missoula, MT’s Wilma Theater this evening.
