Last night, Mike Gordon kicked off his fall tour at Brooklyn, NY’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. Like his 2008 tours, the bassist’s band included Max Creek guitarist Scott Murawski, drummer Todd Isler, keyboardist Tom Cleary and Rubblebucket percussionist Craig Myers. The quintet opened its set with “Dig Further Down” and later offered a number of tracks off The Green Sparrow like “Radar Blip,” “Voices,” “Traveled Too Far” and an extended version of “Andelmans’ Yard” that wrapped around a cover of Radiohead’s “15 Steps.” In addition, Gordon pulled out “Couch Lady” from his 2003 album Inside In, covered Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Swamp Music,” Murawski’s “The Field,” and debuted two new original songs: “What Things Seem” and “Can’t Stand Still.”

Marco Benevento opened the show with a solo piano set that included originals (“Real Morning Party”), covers (My Morning Jacket’s “Golden”) and show-specific references (Trey Anastasio’s “Horn” solo). Later in the night, Joe Russo took the stage with the entire band for Myers’ “Somaila.” Soon after, Benevento emerged to help the group finish the song, and the two musicians remained onstage for a cover of Desmond Dekker’s “Intensified.” Gordon and his band will appear at the Somerville Theatre outside Boston this evening.
