Numerous broadcasters, politicians, musicians and other dignitaries gathered at New York’s Lincoln Center yesterday at memorial service for acclaimed CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite. The evening featured speeches by many of Cronkite’s closest associates, President Obama and former president Bill Clinton. Throughout the night, a number of musicians honored Cronkite’s memory, including Jimmy Buffet, Wynton Marsalis and Mickey Hart. Hart performed with Buffett and, later, Global Drum Project members Zakir Hussain and Sikiru Adepoju, as well as saxophonist Paul Winter.” “Walter turned and asked, ‘Mickey when do we know we have the groove?’” Hart reminisced. “‘Walter you’ll know’ [I said]. A short time later, Cronkite exclaimed, ‘Mickey, I got it!.’” Hart and Cronkite became close friends in the past decade and collaborated onstage at the Green Apple Music Festival in 2006.
