Dave Rawlings Machine will release its first album, A Friend of a Friend, on November 17. This is the first record by Dave Rawlings, the guitarist, producer, singer and songwriter best known for his work with his partner Gillian Welch and Old Crow Medicine Show. In addition with Welch and the members of Old Crow, Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Karl Himmel and Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) all appear on the album.

Rawlings first conceived the project in 2007. “I had a few older songs that I had written with other artists that I wanted to record myself,” Rawlings said in a statement. “Then the last year or so Gillian and I spent a good deal of time in Los Angeles, hanging out with a new group of musicians and songwriters. This inspired a number of songs that seemed to complete the picture. So we started recording. It was as much of a surprise to me as it was to anybody.”

A Friend of a Friend will boast “more lavish arrangements than songs from the Gillian Welch catalog typically do,” including seven new Rawlings originals. Rawlings has also put together a live version of the Machine featuring Welch and three members of Old Crow Medicine Show (Ketch Secor, Willie Watson and Morgan Jahnig). In addition to a series of live dates, while on the road the band will also play a handful of record stores around the country
